Sominex - Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to take Sominex®?
It is recommended to take 2 tablets (25mg. of diphenhydramine HCl per tablet) or 1 caplet (50mg. of diphenhydramine HCl per caplet) one half-hour before you want to fall asleep.

How does Sominex® work?
Sominex® contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine HCl, which will induce drowsiness and will help you fall asleep. It will provide approximately six to eight hours of restful sleep.

Do Sominex® products contain aspirin, caffeine or ibuprofen?
No. Sominex® products do not contain aspirin, caffeine or ibuprofen.

Is Sominex® habit forming?
No. Not as long as you take it as directed and it is helping you to fall asleep. However, if you feel you need to take it for an extended period of time, you might have another sleep condition that needs the attention of a doctor.

Will taking Sominex® cause me to feel tired the next day?
No. Sominex® will only help you to fall asleep. Once you’ve fallen asleep you will continue with your normal sleep pattern and there should be no effect of the drug upon awakening the next morning.

How long after taking Sominex® before I will fall asleep?
Everyone's system is different, so this time can vary. Studies show that Sominex® will help a person fall asleep 38% faster than normal.

Can children take Sominex®?
It is generally recommended that medications that are not children's dosages not be given to children under 12 unless directed by their physician. The product has not been clinically tested on children. We, therefore, can't recommend that a child take Sominex® unless advised to do so by his or her pediatrician.

Why does the label advise not using the product if you have a breathing problem, glaucoma or enlargement of the prostate?
We are required by the Federal Monograph to have this warning statement on our package. Please check with your physician who would be most familiar with your condition. Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Sominex®, is a vasoconstrictor (constricts blood vessels). Therefore, if you have breathing problems, Sominex® may exacerbate this condition. If you have glaucoma, Sominex® may constrict blood vessels in eyes and if you have enlargement of the prostate, Sominex® may cause difficulty in urination.

What is the shelf life of Sominex®?
Sominex® Original Formula has a shelf life of 5 years. Sominex® Maximum Strength has a three year shelf life.

How long after taking Sominex® will the Diphenhydramine HCl remain in my system? (for a blood test)
The half-life of Diphenhydramine HCl is 8 hours; therefore most of it should be gone 48 hours after dosing.

Do you have any information about sleep disorders?
